Mature driver course in California: who it’s for and how the insurance discount works

Short answer

A mature driver course is a DMV-approved class for drivers 55 and older. Ours is online. Finish one and send the certificate to your car insurer. California law requires insurers to give a premium reduction for it, and the insurer sets the amount. The discount lasts three years, and you retake the course every three years to keep it.

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for drivers 55 and older (DMV: approved programs). The insurance discount is for the main driver on the policy who is 55 or older (DMV: Mature Driver Improvement Program; Insurance Code 11628.3).

You don't need a reason to take it. Anyone 55 or older with a California driver's license can sign up for a refresher on the rules of the road.

How does the course work?

Our course is online and split into short sections. Your progress saves, so you can stop and come back.

What does the course cover?

State law sets the topics (Vehicle Code 1675):

  • How poor vision or hearing affects driving, and how to make up for it
  • How fatigue, medicines and alcohol affect driving, alone or together
  • Updates on the rules of the road and on car safety equipment
  • How to plan travel time and pick safer routes
  • How to make quick decisions in dangerous situations

How does the insurance discount work?

The law gives the rules, and your insurer gives the number:

  1. The insurer sets the amount. The law says the reduction must be an "appropriate percentage" based on the insurer's own data. It doesn't set a fixed percentage. Ask your insurer how much, and whether they give the discount, before you pay.
  2. It lasts three years from the day you finish the course.
  3. The insurer can stop it if it finds you at fault in an accident, or if you're convicted of a rules-of-the-road violation (not stopping or parking) or a traffic offense involving alcohol or narcotics.
  4. A court-ordered course doesn't count. If a judge sent you to a course, it doesn't earn this discount (Insurance Code 11628.3).

To keep the discount, take a course again every three years.

How do I sign up?

  1. Call your insurer. Ask if they give the discount, and how much.
  2. Sign up for the course on our course partner's secure page. It's $39.95, one payment, and the certificate is included. You need your California driver's license number and mailing address.
  3. Take the course online, at your own pace.
  4. Send your certificate to your insurance company.

Our course partner handles logins, certificates and refunds. Call or text LLG at (415) 689-9262 if you have a question about the course.

The course is on the DMV's list of approved mature driver courses.

Does it help with a ticket?

No. This course is for the insurance discount only. A ticket has its own rules and deadlines. See our guide to California traffic school, or online traffic school.
